At one end of the scale copy can be thoroughly examined for fitness for purpose, appropriacy, use of language, ambiguity and those infelicities of expression that let down a document badly. At the other end of the scale, proofreading that ensures that no howlers have made it unseen to the finished product will prevent costly reprints and loss of credibility.
